Marriage Counseling vs Marriage Coaching: Which One Do You Actually Need?

By Jeff & Lexie Bodenmuller · 2026-08-17

There are more options than ever for couples who want to work on their marriage — counseling, coaching, retreats, masterminds, intensives, online courses. Which is confusing, because they're not interchangeable. Picking the wrong one wastes money and, worse, wastes momentum you may not have again for a while.

Here's a clear framework for choosing.

Marriage counseling / therapy

Licensed clinical work with a therapist. Best for: trauma, addiction, mental health issues affecting the marriage, infidelity aftermath, patterns rooted in childhood wounds, situations where one or both spouses need individual clinical support.

Not best for: healthy couples who just want to grow, or couples who need practical tools and accountability more than they need deep clinical work.

Marriage coaching

Non-clinical, forward-focused work with a coach. Best for: functional couples who want structured growth, specific skill-building (communication, finances, parenting), goal-setting, and someone to hold them accountable.

Not best for: active crisis, clinical issues (abuse, addiction, severe mental illness), or couples where one spouse won't engage.

Marriage retreats and intensives

A concentrated block of work — usually a weekend to a week — in a group or private setting. Best for: interrupting a pattern, hitting a reset, doing deep work in a short window, launching a new season.

Not best for: sustained change without a follow-up rhythm. Retreats create momentum; something else has to maintain it.

Marriage masterminds

A small group of couples meeting regularly, sharing wisdom and accountability. Best for: long-term compounding growth, community, learning from other couples' experiences, keeping the work going year-round.

Not best for: acute crisis or couples who need one-on-one privacy for their specific issues.

The decision framework

  1. Is there a clinical issue (abuse, addiction, severe mental health, unresolved trauma)? → Start with counseling. Everything else waits.
  2. Are you in active crisis (recent infidelity, considering separation)? → Intensive counseling or a professional retreat. Not group work yet.
  3. Are you functional but stuck or drifting? → Coaching or a mastermind. Add a retreat as a reset.
  4. Are you healthy and want to keep growing? → A mastermind community. Retreats for annual reset. Coaching if you want more.

The stacked approach

The strongest couples we know don't pick one — they stack them. Counseling when clinical work is needed. Coaching when specific skill work is needed. A retreat annually. A mastermind ongoing. This is what marriage-as-a-priority actually looks like in practice.

Campfire is specifically a mastermind + retreat model, and we're clear that it's not a replacement for counseling. We refer out when clinical work is needed, and we're the ongoing container for the years between crises.
